History

Rent a Servant actually started somewhat “accidently”.  A senior saint asked if there were any youth in the church who could come mow his yard that next Saturday.  A willing young man was found and he mowed the yard without fanfare.  The older gentlemen never mentioned payment and the young man just assumed he was serving a member of his congregation.  The next week a check was sent on behalf of the young man’s efforts with a note that the money go towards the youth’s upcoming mission project.  The young man was learning valuable servanthood training while preparing him to serve on our mission project.   The elderly gentlemen was graciously funding a very expensive overseas mission project while at the same time having a practical need met.  The idea of Rent a Servant was born.

As a full time Youth Director for over 12 years, nothing has been more effective in raising financial support, increasing congregational interest in the youth and missions and transforming young people into servants than the Rent a Servant ministry.  The benefits are many.   Here are just a few:

* It teaches young people how to serve BY SERVING.

* It helps young people develop a biblical work ethic.

* It encourages young people to see that God’s blessings are not only financial or tangible.

(Example: blessing of serving others, making new friends, etc.)

* It teaches young people to focus on service “unto the Lord” rather than unto the paycheck.

* It allows the Youth Worker or Mission Project Leader an opportunity to observe character and

work ethic in the servant before taking them on the mission field. Note to Youth Leaders: This is a

great way to address problem areas before you leave so that problems are limited in the field.

* It serves the local church, particularly members who really need such a service.

* It builds relationships within the body between members of many age groups.    In a culture where

the “young and old” have limited opportunities to be together, it allows a natural way for the gap of

   the ages to be bridged.

* It builds prayer support for your church because the Host now has a vested interest in the servant

   and the mission.

* It is a great testimony to neighbors and family members.

* It raises much needed money for missions.

We have found that no other fundraiser (car washes, bake sales, auctions, etc) has been as effective in training people how to serve, serving the local congregation or raising money as Rent a Servant.  In fact, because of the success we have experienced at our church serving our own body, it is for this reason that we wanted to share Rent a Servant with other churches.
