Gulf Coast Mission Project

On Thursday, August 25, 2005 a tropical storm named “Katrina” was given Hurricane status.   Within 96 hours it struck the Gulf Coast.   By the end of its run, Katrina was the 6th strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded (the 3rd strongest ever to touch American soil) devastating dozens of cities, displacing tens of thousands of people

while claiming nearly 2,000 lives.

Now, almost four years later - rebuilding continues.

This summer, we have another opportunity to not only help rebuild homes - but lives as well.   We are pleased to take our fourth trip to the Bay St. Louis/Waveland, Mississippi area to assist in whatever way we can in helping folks capture the hope of Christ and watch Him “restore what the locusts have eaten (Joel 2:25).   Below you will find information that will shed more light on this mission project.  Consider joining us and making a difference in the lives of so many who have lost so much.

Monday, July 6th at 6am from Christ Church (1824 Barnwell Street, Columbia, 29201)

Who can attend?

High School students, college students, young professionals, & adults.   We really encourage families to attend as well.

Please contact us concerning your children should they be under 14 years of age.

Project details:

We are going to minister to a hurting people therefore your desire to attend should be motivated by your desire to minister.   Ministry, as you will learn, occurs in a number of ways.   At times our ministry will be via our work ethic.  We will be asked to perform difficult and unpleasant tasks and we must not only be willing to do them but do them with excellence and a proper attitude.  At times our ministry will be relational.  We will be given close access to people whose lives were devastated by this storm.  In many ways, though 2 years have gone by - they are still living in a terrible situation.   Our ministry will be to encourage them, love them with the love of Christ, evangelize them (should they not know Christ) and pray for them and with them.   Some of you will be more comfortable with a hammer.  Others may prefer to just love on people.   Either way, both aspects are important and will be asked of each person.  Coming with a servant’s heart will ensure that your service will be most effective.   Having said all of that, while there is a need for unskilled workers we must bring a few skilled workers with us as defined below.   If you are in this “skilled” category, please prayerfully considering joining us.

Defintion of a skilled worker:

Skilled would mean 'more than your average weekend warrior.' A skilled worker would be one that REGULARLY does drywall work, electrical, plumbing or framing/finishing carpentry. You should consider yourself or your leadership to be 'skilled' if they could walk in to a house, assess a need, develop a punch list of what supplies are needed, purchase those supplies and then

lead others into the FULL completion of the project WHILE making modifications based on un-forseen contingencies. Teams should consider their make-up INCOMPLETE until skilled labor is part of that team. Our ability to utilize unskilled labor is COMPLETELY dependent on the SKILLED leadership that teams are able to provide for themselves. Teams that do not include any skilled leadership (according to our definitions) will be asked to postpone their trip until such leadership can be recruited from their local area.
